“KANDINSKY” (300 POINTS)
Students will use lines, shapes and color to create a 100% abstract composition that represents the feeling of jazz music.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
10''x14'' inch drawing paper, expression through line handout, create your own kandinsky shapes handout, 1 sheet of copy paper, newsprint paper, earbuds, pencil, thin and thick black sharpie, colored pencils.

STEP #1 (Day 1) - POWERPOINT. Please go through the powerpoint below to learn about the abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky.
STEP #2 (Day 1) - EXPRESSION THROUGH LINE. Complete the expression through line handout. Copy the different qualities of line below to the top of your handout. Draw lines that represent each emotion. Example: Would a silly line be heavy and bold or light and thin? Would it be short or long? Would it be spiraling or horizontal? Would it be sharp or smooth? Combine all the qualities. For Example: a silly line would be thin, long, spiraling and smooth. So you would draw a thin, long, spiraling, smooth line.
STEP #3 (Day 2) - DRAWING LINES TO MUSIC. Fold a sheet of copy paper into four sections. Label each section. Song #1, Song #2, Song #3, Song #4. In each section you will draw lines that represent the feelings of each song in the playlist below. You will play each song for 1 minute and draw for 1 minute. Don't forget to combine the different qualities of line.

STEP #4 (Day 3) - DRAWING JAZZ SHAPES. Complete the "Create your own Kandinsky shapes" handout below. Practice drawing shapes that would represent jazz instruments. You will be drawing these in your final composition.
STEP #5 (Day 4) - COMPOSING 4 SONGS. Fold your newsprint paper into four sections. Label each section, song #1, song #2, song #3 and song #4. Copy the lines below to get you started. In each section you will create a composition that represents each JAZZ song below. Listen for 3 minutes and draw for 3 minutes. This time you are combining lines and the shapes you created for the instruments. You will draw different qualities of line and when you hear an instrument you will add the shapes for that instrument. Make sure that some shapes and lines run off each edge of the paper. Make sure to overlap the lines and shapes. You will choose the best one to transfer to the final drawing paper.

STEP #6 (Day 5) - COPY BEST COMPOSITION. Copy your best composition to the final drawing paper. If you don't have a favorite then you can combine different elements from all four compositions to make a new one. Trace over all your pencil lines with a thin and thick sharpie. Also fill in black shapes with sharpie.
STEP #7 (Day 6 -20) - ADDING COLOR. Color each section with a solid color or gradient from light to dark. Place complimentary colors next to each other. Red next to Green. Blue next to Orange. Purple next to Yellow. When complete write you name and period # on the back.
OIL PASTEL EXAMPLES FROM PREVIOUS YEARS. YOURS WILL LOOK DIFFERENT IN COLORED PENCIL.
