Course Description Art 1 is a one-year
introduction to the world of visual art and a preparation
for higher-level art courses. Students will learn to make
aesthetic decisions based on knowledge of drawing, the
elements and principles of design and art history.
Standards California State Visual and Performing
Arts state standards: Artistic Perception, Creative
Expression, Historical and Cultural Content, Aesthetic
Valuing, and Connections, Relations, Application.
Course Goals and Objectives
1. Understand the elements and principles of design.
2. Understand how the elements and principles of
design are used.
3. Understand color theory.
4. Explain the history and drives resulting in several
recent art movements.
5. Increase your ability to appreciate art and the artistic
process.
Units: Space, Line, Value and Form, Color Theory &
Art History

Pencils, Pen and Ink, Charcoal, Tempera Paint,
Watercolor, Oil Pastels
Course Evaluation
75% Completion of Units/Projects
20% Quizzes and Finals
5% Studio Conduct – How well the students follow art
clean up procedure as monitors.
Grading Criteria for projects (100pts)

Classroom Procedures
1) Come in sit in your assigned seat quietly.
2) Teacher will take roll and give opening
instructions.
3) Students will be dismissed to go pick up their
portfolio, collect materials and start working on
current project.
4) 5 minutes before the period ends. Student will
put their portfolios and materials away. Each
student is responsible for cleaning his or her
own work space.
5) Wait quietly in your assigned seat to be
dismissed by table. You cannot stand by the
door.

Discipline
Negative Consequences for students that are disruptive
and are not following the rules:
1: Warning
2: Refocus Activity and Call Home
3: Office Referral / Removal from Class
*Office referral for severe disruptions*
Absences/Tardiness Absences and Tardies will
affect student’s participation. If you are absent or tardy
it is your responsibility to make up all work. That
includes coming and talking to me, asking for art
supplies, and reading the instructions.
