CERAMICS SHOE BOX (300 Points)
Students will decorate and waterproof a shoe box that will store their clay work and tools.
Grading Criteria
Criteria used for grading shall include, but not be limited to, design, originality, craftsmanship, following directions and assignment objectives, daily studio work habits and participation, deadline management, design research (sketches). Your Ceramics Shoe Box must meet all criteria listed below for each step.
You will submit this project through google classroom. Please upload a picture of:
1) Your completed box
2) Color wheel worksheet
3) Monochromatic worksheet
4) Design sketches and color schemes
Grading Scale
Excellent, exceeds expectations A 270-300
Meets all goals of assignment B 240-269
Average, meets most goals C 210-239
Meets minimum of goals D 180-209
No goal of assignment met F 00-179

STEP #1 BOX : Bring in a large empty shoe box. Put your name and period # on the outside. Store on the shelf designated to your period #
STEP #2 Color Wheel/ Mixing Colors Lesson: You will learn to mix all the colors on the color wheel with just the primary colors red, blue and yellow. You will be given a color wheel template to fill. You will paint the primary colors, mix secondary green, orange and violet. You will also mix all 6 tertiary colors. You will also paint a monochromatic values scale.
Primary Colors - red, blue and yellow (cannot be made by mixing other colors).
Secondary Colors - orange, green and purple. Are created by mixing primary colors.
red and yellow = orange
blue and yellow = green
red and blue= violet
Tertiary Colors - are created by mixing primary colors with secondary colors.
yellow and orange = yellow-orange
red and orange = red-orange
red and violet = red-violet
blue and violet = blue-violet
blue and green=blue-green
green and yellow =yellow-green
(ex: yellow green, primary color always goes first)

STEP #3 Come up with 5 different designs one for each side.

STEP #4 PAPER COLLAGE: Cover the outside of the box with paper collage. You will need white glue and drawing paper. Tear 2x2 inch pieces of drawing paper and glue each one on the box until the outside is completely covered. You will need to cover the top, sides, front and back. The paper collage must have a smooth surface. Spread a thin amount of glue to all outer edges of your paper with your finger.
STEP #5 Sketch your final radial design on to the box in pencil.
STEP #6 Final Paint layer: With tempera paint the design you sketched in pencil.
STEP #7 Cover the inside and outside of your box with the shipping tape.
