“Battle of the Bands” / Visual Design Problem Solving
Rules & Guidelines
1. Two side-by-side circles, 8” in diameter, using a compass. (Should look like record turntable) . You will use a sheet of the White 12x18 paper, compass, ruler and it must be in color. You can use markers, colored pencils, and/or watercolor. Example pictures below are on black paper. You will be using WHITE paper.
2. Each circle represents a specific song of your choice. Songs should be dramatically different in style to represent the different types of music. (Rock vs. pop, country vs. classical, retro vs. jazz, etc.) Your task is to illustrate two very different music styles using two very different designs. What will it look like if you could only use COLOR, SHAPE, and line to explain the songs?
3. NO WORDS, IMAGES, OR UNDERSTANDABLE SYMBOLS MAY BE USED TO DESCRIBE SONGS.
4. One song should be ASYMMETRICAL in design, one SYMMETRICAL in design.
5. Each song can use no more than FIVE COLORS and BLACK and WHITE (NEUTRALS), Three of your selected colors for each circle MUST BE ANALOGOUS to one another.
6. All shapes and designs must use a ruler, compass, or stencil to develop a message. Any free-handed shapes must appear to have used a straight edge or curved tool.
7. At least 40% of EACH design MUST include full blended value or blended value using counterchange. One of the most important ways we will create the feeling of RHYTHM is by changing the VALUE (shading) on different parts of your design to create the feeling of depth on a flat surface.
8. All designs must use the key below in creating the designs. You, as the artist may interpret these symbols.
circle =pop music
square = rock
triangle = country
arrows = alternative
etc. (see chart below)
9. Write the tong artist and title above each design.
